Southern Air has awarded MTU Maintenance an exclusive long-term maintenance and lease engine provisioning contract covering all present and future General Electric (GE) CF6-80C2 engines in Southern Air’s 747-400 freighter fleet. The contract with the U.S. based cargo carrier is valued at over 100 million US dollars.
MTU Maintenance has been the exclusive provider for the maintenance of Southern Air’s GE90 engines for the past two years and can draw upon over three decades of experience in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of high-thrust engines. The CF6-80 was included into the maintenance profile in 1989 and MTU Maintenance recently completed the 1,500th overhaul of this engine type at its facility in Hanover. In 2012 the company performed 12 percent of all CF6-80C2 repair and overhaul shop visits. MTU Maintenance says it has developed a number of innovative high-tech repair techniques which allow the engine to stay on-wing longer and help customers reduce their maintenance costs.
